Lower Salford Township was established in 1741 when Salford Township was divided into the present day townships of Marlborough, Lower Salford and Upper Salford. Large farms, mills and churches were the only types of buildings scattered across the township. This exclusively rural way of life lasted well into the twentieth century. However, it was during the past fifteen years that the township started to see an increase in residential and small commercial developments. Even as the township continues to grow in the coming years, many hope it will still retain much of its rural characteristics. Communities within the township include Harleysville, Lederach, Mainland, and Vernfield.

PUBLIC SERVICES
The Harleysville and Mainland sections of the township are serviced by public water and sewer facilities. Sewer service has been extended to the Lederach portion of the township. A full-time police force serves the township. Fire protection is provided by volunteer companies. Residential trash disposal is arranged by private contractors.

RECREATION
A Township Parks Board and a part-time Parks Coordinator administer various programs. Facilities include camping and picnicking. The Heckler Plains Farmstead is a large conservation area and historical site. The Harleysville Community Center has tennis courts, a public swimming pool and softball fields. For more information on what is available, including Little League programs, please call 215-256-8087.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
No SEPTA bus or rail lines serve the township.

SHOPPING
Several small shopping plazas are located along the main street section of the township (Route 63). Other small business are located in the township. The nearest major shopping mall is the Montgomery Mall.
