Things To Do Before Moving Into a New Home

First, start by setting up your utilities, including water, electricity, gas, trash, recycling, cable, and internet – any service you know you’ll need. Some may take longer than others, so start getting everything set up as soon as possible. You may want to adjust your move-in date or turn-on date to accommodate any installations, as well.

Even with a new-construction home, you’ll probably want to go in and do a deep clean, making sure all construction dust, stickers, and more are cleaned up and your home is sparkling. If you plan on doing any painting or installing blinds, curtains, etc., doing this in advance is a good idea to avoid more construction dust and any paint splatter.

You may also want to set up a home security system in advance so that you and your belongings are safe from day one. Also, if your home doesn’t come with a warranty, it’s a good idea to purchase one to protect against any unexpected damages from pipes and other problems.

Take some time to walk around and really get to know your new home, including where to turn on/off water and electricity and where meters are. You should also label your electrical panel for ease of use. While you’re looking around, check for anything that should be child- or pet-proofed if necessary before moving in the whole family.

Finally, don’t forget to change your mailing address and update any bills, subscriptions, and other groups and organizations, such as schools, doctors, etc. Be sure to forward your mail via the Post Office, as well, to catch anything you may have forgotten.
